Origins of our universe

So have you heard the news out of Melbourne this week? It’s pretty important stuff …

"Aussie researchers rewrite Big Bang theory."

"A paper being published in a US physics journal suggests it may be possible to view "cracks" in the universe that would support the theory of Quantum Graphity - considered to be the holy grail of physics. The team of researchers from the University of Melbourne and RMIT say instead of thinking of the start of the universe as being a big bang, we should imagine it as a cooling of water into ice. In the beginning there wasn't even space, space did not exist because there was no form."

You might think this has nothing to do with you because … frankly who cares? Stick with me here …

“Mr. Quach says the biggest problem with the big bang model is the bang itself. At the bang, physics breaks down. The model cannot make any predictions at what occurs at the big bang. You can't use any of the mathematics (or) any of the theories."

There are a number of things to consider here, especially for the layman who thinks this has nothing to do with them. In fact, our understanding of science and knowledge has a significant impact on our personal worldview. Many of our decisions in life are based on our understanding of science and knowledge whether you acknowledge it or not.

Firstly, it is good to see the secular media publishing the thoughts from a recognized scientist that the Big Bang simply does not make sense from a scientific and mathematical perspective. Although this has always seemed obvious to me, only an engineer with a scientific interest, the Big Bang is now-days (until yesterday in any case) presented as scientific truth. Just because a lot of people say it is true doesn’t make it true!

Secondly, it is interesting that wording that the researchers use. It is very similar to that from the bible that says,

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Gen 1:1-3

I wonder if Moses had some working knowledge of Quantum Graphity when he wrote Genesis over 3000 years ago considering he left out the Big Bang but instead wrote of formlessness and water prior to creation.

Finally, and most importantly, is the idolization of science and knowledge in our world today. We have placed so much importance on physical science today that we believe that if the physical sciences cannot explain something, then it cannot be real or true. What a short sighted and arrogant assumption of higher intelligence from those who adopt this attitude. Over the past few hundred centuries, many of the scientists believed in the existence of God, even if they were not Christian. Today society would say those people were ignorant, uneducated, primitive and so on. The irony though is that what these men discovered in science still stand today and forms the foundation from which many of today’s scientists base their research on. It is nothing but a lie and fallacy to label those who believe in God as intellectually inferior.

Why do we feel threatened as a human race to acknowledge that we do not understand all that our world consists of? Does our worldview really propose that we are so intelligent that there is nothing we cannot understand? Gnostics throughout history have claimed revelation and enlightenment through the gaining of knowledge. Do we really think that knowledge can ‘save’ us? I agree that education and the adding of knowledge is a good thing and should be encouraged but it will never provide all the answers to the life. It is my understanding and worldview that the science we study and the knowledge we gain in this life are nothing more than a discovery of what God has created, who He is and ultimately who we are in relationship to our Creator. This in turn impacts how I live my life. What does your worldview say about science and knowledge? Are you influenced by society today and idolize it or have you taken the time to examine the facts yourself? The understanding of science and knowledge in society today is certainly a place where worldviews collide!!!

Can I propose that scientific theories will come and go over the course of history but the One who created it all will never change? Let us discover the wonderful and exciting things of this world but never elevate that discovery and knowledge above the Creator Himself.
